RE-INTERPRETING THE CONTINENT

CONTEMPORARY ITALIAN PHILOSOPHY IN AMERICA

OCTOBER 1-2, 2004

DE PAUL UNIVERSITY

CHICAGO, IL

The purpose of this conference, “Re-Interpreting the Continent:  Contemporary Italian Philosophy in America,” is to examine, assess, and promote the unique and timely contributions that contemporary Italian philosophers have made to Continental philosophy.  The philosophical relevance of this conference rests upon the thesis that Italian philosophy reflects a unique and fruitful perspective on the major themes of Continental philosophy.  In order to explore these contributions, Italian philosophers will be paired with American thinkers and discuss the way that Italian philosophers differ from their French and German counterparts, whose work is much more diffuse in the United States.  Particular attention will be paid to the central role of hermeneutics in the development of this unique Italian perspective.
